Gladiators were trained fighters in ancient Rome who entertained spectators with battles to the death in arenas called amphitheaters. Gladiators came from various backgrounds, including prisoners of war, slaves, and volunteers, and were trained in various forms of combat, such as sword fighting, fencing, and wrestling. Some gladiators had specific specialties, such as the retiarius, who fought with a trident and net, or the murmillo, who wore a helmet shaped like a fish. Their fights were often highly choreographed and planned in advance, and they were often given elaborate costumes and weapons to make their battles more visually appealing. Gladiator games were popular entertainment and used to satiate the bloodlust of the Roman people. With the decline of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, gladiator games fell out of favor and eventually disappeared.
