What is gleeking?

Gleeking is the sudden ejection of saliva from the sublingual gland, located under the tongue. It's often unintentional and can be surprising or even embarrassing.

 • Mechanism: Gleeking occurs when pressure is applied to the salivary glands, typically the sublingual gland. This pressure forces saliva through the duct and out from under the tongue. Actions like yawning, talking, or even just moving the tongue can trigger it.

 • Control: Some people can learn to control gleeking to some extent. By consciously tensing and relaxing the tongue and jaw, they can sometimes trigger a controlled gleek. However, for most, it remains an involuntary reflex.

 • Hygiene: While generally harmless, the ejected saliva could potentially carry bacteria. So, it's best to avoid gleeking directly onto food or people.

 • Factors: There is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that dehydration can affect gleeking. Some individuals claim they gleek more when they are dehydrated, however, it is worth to note there is no real scientific data to support it.

 • Is it normal? Yes, it is a normal physiological phenomenon, even if it's not something everyone experiences or discusses openly.
