What is gowli?

Gowli are a community primarily found in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and some parts of Andhra%20Pradesh in India. They are traditionally involved in cattle herding and dairy farming, hence their association with the term "Gowli," which is related to "Gwala" or "Gopala" (cowherd).

Their social and economic status varies across different regions. They often have distinct cultural practices, dialects, and social structures. The Gowli%20language is a dialect of Marathi.

Historically, their traditional occupation has been central to their identity, although many have diversified into other occupations over time. The community has faced various socio-economic challenges and is sometimes classified among Other Backward Classes (OBC) in some states, allowing them access to certain affirmative action programs.
