Hale-Bopp is a comet that was discovered on July 23, 1995 by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp. It became widely visible to the naked eye from Earth in March 1997 and was one of the most widely observed comets of the 20th century. Its close approach to Earth made it the brightest comet since Comet West in 1976. The comet was visible to the naked eye for a record-breaking 18 months and was a popular subject for amateur astronomers and photographers. The comet's nucleus was estimated to be about 40 km in diameter, making it one of the largest comets ever observed. Its tail stretched for millions of kilometers behind it as it traveled through the solar system. The Hale-Bopp comet will not return to the inner Solar System until around the year 4385.
