What is hangdrum?

The hang drum, also known as the handpan, is an instrument that was created in Switzerland in 2000 by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. It is a percussion instrument that is played with the hands and consists of two metal hemispheres that are glued together and shaped like a UFO. The hang has a total of eight to nine notes, usually arranged in a circle around the central tone called the "ding." The specifics of the tuning and note layout can vary between different makers and models.

The handpan produces a warm, resonant, and melodic sound that is often described as soothing and meditative. It has gained popularity around the world and has been used in various musical genres, including world music, jazz, and electronic music.

Due to its unique sound and appearance, the hang has inspired many people to learn how to play it. However, the instrument is difficult to find and expensive to purchase, as it is handcrafted and limited in production. Additionally, the makers of the hang drum have trademarked the term "Hang," and therefore, any similar instrument created by other makers must be referred to by a different name.
