What is hemo?

Hemo is a prefix that is derived from the Greek word "haima", which means blood. Therefore, words that start with the prefix hemo refer to things related to blood. For instance, hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, and hematocrit is a measure of the percentage of red blood cells in the blood. Medical terms that contain the prefix hemo include hemophilia, a genetic disorder that affects the ability of blood to clot; hematology, the study of blood and blood disorders; and hemodialysis, a medical treatment for kidney failure that involves filtering the blood outside the body.
