What is herrmannsdenkmal?

Herrmannsdenkmal (also known in English as Hermann Monument) is a monument located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Detmold in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The monument was erected in 1875-1878 to commemorate the victory of the Germanic tribes over the Roman army in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9. The statue is 53 meters (174 feet) tall and depicts Arminius, the leader of the Germanic tribes, also known as Hermann, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield in his left hand. The statue stands on a hill called the Grotenburg, which offers a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The monument attracts thousands of visitors each year and is considered one of the most iconic landmarks of Germany.
