HMM-362, also known as the "Ugly Angels," was a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron that operated during the Vietnam War. The squadron was first established on 30 June 1952 and was based at MCAS Santa Ana, California, flying Sikorsky HRS-1 helicopters. The squadron was decommissioned in 1958 and reactivated in 1962 as a transport helicopter unit.
During the Vietnam War, HMM-362 operated in the I Corps Tactical Zone in northern Vietnam, providing air support for ground operations. The pilots and crew of the Ugly Angels participated in some of the most intense combat actions of the war, earning a reputation for bravery and professionalism.
The squadron flew several different helicopters during its Vietnam War service, including the UH-34D Seahorse and the CH-46 Sea Knight. The Ugly Angels were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for their actions on 8 April 1968, when they provided air support to Marines engaged in fierce combat in near Khe Sanh.
HMM-362 was disbanded in 2005, but the squadron's legacy lives on. The Ugly Angels are remembered for their courage, dedication, and skill, and their contributions to the success of Marine Corps operations in Vietnam.
