What is hoco?

HOCO, often short for Homecoming, is a tradition in many high schools and colleges in the United States and Canada. It typically involves a week-long celebration culminating in a football game played on the school's home field, along with various social events designed to foster school spirit and alumni engagement.

Key aspects of HOCO include:

  • Football Game: The centerpiece of the celebration is usually a football game, often against a rival school.
  • Homecoming Court: Students nominate and elect representatives, often seniors, to be part of the Homecoming Court. From this court, a Homecoming King and Queen are typically chosen.
  • Parade: Many schools organize parades featuring floats created by different student organizations and clubs.
  • Pep Rallies: Pep rallies are held throughout the week to boost school spirit and support the football team.
  • School Decorations: Students often decorate the school with school colors and banners.
  • Homecoming Dance: A formal or semi-formal dance is a popular event, usually held on the Saturday evening of Homecoming weekend.
  • Alumni Involvement: Homecoming is also a time for alumni to return to their alma mater and reconnect with old friends and the school community.
