What is hyperkinesia?

Hyperkinesia is a neurological disorder characterized by excessive, involuntary movements. These movements can include twitching, jerking, tremors, or writhing motions. Hyperkinesia is often caused by abnormalities in the basal ganglia, a region of the brain that regulates movement.

There are various types of hyperkinesia, including chorea, athetosis, dystonia, and myoclonus. These conditions can be inherited or acquired, and can vary in severity. Hyperkinesia can be a symptom of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, or Tourette syndrome.

Treatment for hyperkinesia typically involves medications to help control the symptoms, as well as therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. In some cases, surgery may be an option for severe cases of hyperkinesia. It is important for individuals with hyperkinesia to work closely with a healthcare team to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
