What is icmbio?

ICMBio (Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade) is a Brazilian government agency responsible for the management of Brazil's protected areas. It was created in 2007 and is named after Chico Mendes, a Brazilian environmentalist who was murdered in 1988.

ICMBio oversees a network of over 340 protected areas, including national parks, biological reserves, and wildlife refuges. It is also responsible for the conservation and management of threatened species and ecosystems.

The agency's mission is to promote the conservation of Brazil's biodiversity, ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, and support environmental research and education. It works in partnership with other government agencies, NGOs, and local communities to carry out its mission.

ICMBio has been involved in a number of high-profile conservation initiatives, including the protection of the Amazon rainforest and the management of marine conservation areas. It is also responsible for enforcing environmental laws and regulations in Brazil.
