What is inanition?

Inanition is a condition where the body is severely depleted of energy and nutrients, leading to extreme weakness, exhaustion, and even organ failure. It is mostly caused by prolonged starvation, excessive loss of fluids through sweating, diarrhoea, or vomiting, or a combination of both. Inanition can be life-threatening if not identified and treated timely, as it can lead to severe electrolyte imbalances, hypoglycaemia, and metabolic disturbances. Symptoms of inanition include rapid weight loss, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, vomiting, reduced urine output, and irregular heartbeats. Treatment involves restoring fluid and nutrient balance through oral or intravenous administration, and addressing any underlying causes that may have led to inanition. With proper management, most people can recover from inanition, although it may take some time for their body to fully regain strength and functionality.
