What is isarod?

Isarod, also known as the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, is an annual long-distance sled dog race that takes place in Alaska, USA. The race began in 1973 and covers a distance of approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) from Anchorage to Nome. The race takes place in the dead of winter, usually starting on the first weekend in March. The trail takes the mushers and their dog teams through rugged terrain, over steep mountain passes, through frozen rivers and across the barren tundra of the Alaskan wilderness. The race can take anywhere from 8 to 14 days to complete, depending on several factors, such as weather conditions and the size of the dog team. The Iditarod is considered to be the most prestigious sled dog race in the world and has been instrumental in preserving the sled dog culture and heritage in Alaska.
