Ismarus is a city mentioned in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey. It is located on the island of Ismarus, which is thought to be in present-day Thrace, in northeastern Greece. Ismarus is the home of the Cicones, a Thracian tribe, and was visited by Odysseus and his crew on their journey back from the Trojan War.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus and his men land at Ismarus and raid the city, plundering it. However, they are eventually driven away by the Cicones, who gather reinforcements and attack them. Many of Odysseus' men are killed in the battle, leading to a setback in their journey home.
The episode at Ismarus serves as an example of the consequences of impulsive and destructive behavior, as well as the dangers of ignoring the customs and traditions of the lands they visit. Ismarus is also highlighted as a cautionary tale about the risks and consequences of greed and violence.
