What is isosorbid?

Isosorbide is a medication used to prevent chest pain (angina) caused by heart disease. It works by relaxing the blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the heart which helps to reduce the workload on the heart, and thereby improve its functioning. It belongs to a class of drugs known as nitrates.

Isosorbide is available in different formulations such as tablets, capsules, extended-release tablets, and oral solutions. These are prescribed based on the severity of the condition and the needs of the patient. Isosorbide typically starts to work within 5-10 minutes after administration and its effects can last for up to several hours.

As with any medication, isosorbide is associated with some side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and flushing. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own over time. In rare cases, isosorbide can lead to more serious side effects such as low blood pressure, fainting, and heart attack. It is important to talk to your doctor if you experience any side effects or have any concerns about taking isosorbide.
