What is ixtab?

Ix tab, also known as the Rope Woman, is a figure from Mayan mythology who was believed to be the goddess of suicide. She was associated with the act of hanging oneself and was considered to be a benevolent deity who would guide the souls of those who died by suicide to the afterlife.

In Mayan belief, suicide was not considered a sin or a shameful act, but rather a way for individuals to escape the hardships and challenges of life. Ix tab was seen as a compassionate and understanding figure who would comfort and support those who chose to end their own lives.

Despite her association with death and suicide, Ix tab was also believed to be a guardian of the road to the underworld, known as Xibalba. She was often depicted as a young woman with a noose around her neck, symbolizing her role as the goddess of suicide.

Ix tab is a lesser-known figure in Mayan mythology, but she is still revered by some modern-day Mayan communities as a protector of those who are struggling with mental health issues or contemplating suicide. She is seen as a source of comfort and understanding for those who are facing difficult times in their lives.
