What is juke?

The term "juke" is often used in reference to two different things - a type of dance popular in the 1940s and a type of music originating in the American South in the early 20th century.

The juke dance was similar to the jitterbug and swing dances, characterized by quick and energetic movements, often performed to fast-paced music.

Juke music, on the other hand, is a style of music that evolved from blues and ragtime in the early 20th century. Originally played in juke joints, small rural establishments where African Americans could gather to drink, dance and listen to music, juke music often features a fast tempo and a lively, rhythmic beat.

Some famous juke musicians include Muddy Waters, B.B. King and Howlin' Wolf. Juke music continues to influence modern genres such as rock and roll, R&B and hip-hop.
