Junebugs, also known as June beetles or May beetles, are a type of scarab beetle and belong to the family Scarabaeidae. They are a common insect found throughout North America and are active during the summer months, typically from May to early July.
Junebugs have oval-shaped bodies that range in size from 10 to 25 millimeters in length. They have a hard, shiny outer shell that is usually brown in color, although some species may be black or greenish in hue.
Adult Junebugs feed on the leaves and foliage of trees, while their larvae feed on the roots of various grasses and crops. The larvae spend most of their life underground, eventually emerging as adults in late spring or early summer. They are nocturnal and are attracted to lights at night, often flying into homes and buildings in search of light sources.
While Junebugs are not harmful to humans, they can be a nuisance due to their attraction to light and tendency to fly into homes. Additionally, their larvae can cause damage to lawns and crops if they are present in large numbers.
