Kamaiya is a term used in Nepal to refer to bonded laborers or slaves who were traditionally forced to work for their landlords without any pay. These workers are usually from the lower castes and are often brought to work for their landlords as part of an agreement that is passed down through generations. In 2000, the Nepalese government declared the kamaiya system illegal and ordered the release of 10,000 kamaiya from bondage. However, the practice still persists in some parts of the country, and many former kamaiya continue to struggle with economic and social problems related to their former status as bonded laborers. Organizations like the National Kamaiya Freedom Movement are working to raise awareness about the issues facing kamaiya and advocate for their rights and freedoms.
