What is katipuneros?

Katipuneros were Filipino revolutionaries who fought for the country's independence from Spanish colonial rule during the late 19th century. They were members of the Katipunan, a secret society founded by Andres Bonifacio in 1892.

The Katipunan's main goal was to overthrow the Spanish government and establish a free and independent Philippines. Its members, known as Katipuneros, came from various social classes and backgrounds, including peasants, workers, and intellectuals.

The Katipunan was organized into local chapters known as balangays, each led by a balangay head. Members of the society were required to take an oath of secrecy and loyalty to the society.

The Katipunan was instrumental in sparking the Philippine Revolution of 1896, which eventually led to the downfall of Spanish colonial rule. Despite the eventual success of the revolution, many Katipuneros lost their lives in the fight for independence.
