What is knefe?

Knefe or knafeh is a Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded phyllo dough (kataifi) and a sweet cheese filling, soaked in a rosewater syrup and topped with chopped pistachios. It is especially popular during Ramadan, but is enjoyed year-round in many countries such as Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. There are many variations of knefe, including a savory version made with ground meat or vegetables and a sweet version made with semolina or shredded coconut. Knefe can be served warm or at room temperature and is often garnished with orange blossom water or honey.
