Tadeusz Kościuszko was a Polish-Lithuanian military engineer and statesman who fought in the American Revolutionary War. He is widely regarded as a national hero in Poland, Lithuania, and the United States. Kościuszko was born in 1746 in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which at the time was a state comprising modern-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. He studied engineering in France and served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, where he played a pivotal role in several key battles. After the war, Kościuszko returned to Poland and led a rebellion against the Russian Empire. Although the rebellion was ultimately crushed, Kościuszko's legacy as a champion of democracy and human rights endures to this day. He died in Switzerland in 1817 and was buried in Poland's Wawel Cathedral, alongside other national heroes.
