What is kuy?

Kuy, also known as Kuoy or Suoy, is a language spoken by the Kuy people in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It belongs to the Austroasiatic language family and is closely related to other languages spoken in Southeast Asia such as Khmer and Mon.

There are approximately 200,000 speakers of Kuy, with the majority residing in Cambodia. The language is considered endangered as younger generations are not learning it at the same rate as older generations.

Kuy has a complex system of vowels and tones, with six vowels and up to six different tones. It also has a unique script known as the "Kuy script," although it is not widely used today.

Traditionally, the Kuy people were animists and practiced ancestor worship, but many have converted to Buddhism or Christianity in recent years. They also have a rich culture of music and dance, including the famous "Circle Dance" which is performed during the Khmer New Year.
