What is lactat?

Lactate is a type of organic acid that is produced in the body during exercise, especially when the muscles are working anaerobically (without oxygen). It is a byproduct of the breakdown of glucose in the muscles and is also produced by other organs such as the liver and kidneys. Lactate levels can be measured in blood and are used as an indicator of exercise intensity and metabolic rate. High levels of lactate can cause muscle fatigue and cramping, and in extreme cases can lead to lactic acidosis, a potentially dangerous condition in which the blood becomes too acidic. However, lactate can also serve as an important fuel source for the muscles and brain during periods of prolonged or intense exercise. It is also used in the dairy industry to make cheese and yogurt.
