What is lazica?

Lazica is an ancient kingdom located on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, now located in modern-day Georgia. It was initially founded in the 4th century BC and was ruled by a series of dynasties that were influenced by the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Lazica played a significant role in the Roman-Byzantine Empire's relations with Persia and the Caucasus.

Lazica had a strategic location due to its proximity to the Caucasus Mountains and the Silk Road, making it an important center for trade. The kingdom was also known for its well-established maritime trade, with Roman, Byzantine, and Persian goods being transported through its ports. Additionally, Lazica was a significant religious center, with the region becoming a stronghold for the Eastern Orthodox Church.

In the early medieval period, Lazica was absorbed into the Georgian Kingdom and effectively disappeared as a distinct territorial entity. Today, the historical region of Lazica is home to the modern-day autonomous republic of Ajara in Georgia and several historical and archaeological sites, including the ancient fortresses of Petra and Gonio.
