What is leveled?

Leveled reading refers to a system of assessing and organizing books based on their difficulty level, so that children can be matched with texts that match their individual skills and goals. This system is commonly used in schools and libraries to help children find books that are appropriate for their reading level and to support their literacy development.

Leveled books are typically organized into different levels based on factors such as word count, sentence structure, vocabulary, and content complexity. The most commonly used leveling systems are the Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Leveling System, the Lexile Framework for Reading, and Reading Recovery.

The purpose of leveled reading is to provide a structured approach to reading instruction that gradually increases in complexity as children develop their skills and knowledge, ultimately facilitating their ability to read and comprehend texts independently. By choosing books that match a child's level of ability, children are more likely to enjoy reading and make meaningful progress in their literacy skills.
