What is lime-pit?

A lime-pit is a type of kiln used for producing quicklime. Quicklime is made by burning limestone or other materials containing calcium carbonate at a high temperature. The lime-pit is constructed of stone or brick and is typically about 10-20 feet in diameter and 10-15 feet deep. The pit is filled with alternating layers of fuel and limestone, and then set on fire. The heat from the fire causes the limestone to break down and release the calcium oxide, which is then cooled and collected. Quicklime has many uses, including in construction, agriculture, and chemical manufacturing. However, it can be hazardous to handle as it is highly reactive with water and can cause skin and eye irritation, as well as respiratory problems when inhaled.
