Lukian or Lucian of Samosata was a Greek-speaking Syrian satirist and rhetorician who lived during the 2nd century AD. He was born in the city of Samosata on the Euphrates, which was the capital of the Roman province of Syria. He wrote over 80 works, including dialogues, treatises, and literary parodies. Lukian is known for his skepticism and wit, and his works often mocked religion, mythology, philosophy, and the social customs of his time. Some of his most famous works include "The True Story," a parody of adventure stories and travelogues, and "The Dialogues of the Gods," a satirical look at the gods of Greek mythology. Lukian's writing has had a profound influence on Western literature, and he is considered one of the earliest and most important satirists in the Western tradition.
