What is mahidevran?

Mahidevran was a powerful and influential Ottoman woman who served as the consort of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the longest-reigning Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. She was originally a slave in the harem of Sultan Selim I, who later gave her to his son, Suleiman. Mahidevran was the mother of Suleiman's eldest son, Şehzade Mustafa, who was initially the heir apparent to the throne.

Mahidevran was known for her beauty, intelligence, and political acumen. She played a significant role in the court politics of the Ottoman Empire and was well respected by both Suleiman and the members of the Imperial harem. Despite being a slave concubine, Mahidevran managed to gain considerable power and influence during her time at court.

However, Mahidevran's position at court was ultimately threatened by Suleiman's other concubine, Roxelana, who managed to rise in favor and ultimately became Suleiman's legal wife. This led to tensions between Mahidevran and Roxelana, as well as their respective factions within the harem. In the end, Mahidevran's son, Şehzade Mustafa, was accused of treason and executed, which led to Mahidevran's fall from grace and eventual exile from the palace.

Despite her tragic end, Mahidevran is remembered as a strong and influential woman who played a significant role in the politics of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent.
