What is maid-in-waiting?

A maid-in-waiting is a female attendant or lady-in-waiting who serves in the household of a queen, princess, or noblewoman. Their duties may include assisting with dressing and grooming, accompanying the lady on social engagements, and supporting her emotionally and socially. Historically, maidens-in-waiting were selected based on their social status and suitability for court life. They were often chosen from noble or wealthy families and held prestigious positions within royal households. Today, the position of maid-in-waiting is largely ceremonial and may be held by women from a variety of backgrounds.
