What is maleole?

The malleolus refers to a bony prominence located on either side of the ankle joint, formed by the distal ends of the tibia and fibula bones. The lateral malleolus is located on the outer part of the ankle and is part of the fibula bone, while the medial malleolus is on the inner part of the ankle and is part of the tibia bone. These structures provide stability to the ankle joint and serve as attachment points for ligaments and tendons that aid in movement and support of the foot and ankle. Malleolar fractures can occur from traumatic injuries such as ankle sprains, or from underlying medical conditions that weaken bone density.
