What is maran?

Marans are a breed of chicken originally from the town of Marans, in southwestern France. They are known for their dark brown eggs, which are among the darkest laid by any chicken breed. Marans come in a variety of colors, including black, white, wheaten, and cuckoo. They are a medium-sized bird, known for their muscular build and hardiness.

In terms of temperament, Marans are usually docile and friendly, making them good pets. They are also easy to care for, require minimal maintenance, and are very adaptable to different living situations. Marans are often used in breeding programs to produce dark brown eggs or for meat production.

The Marans breed has been around for over a century, although it has faced challenges due to the two World Wars and subsequent industrialization. In recent years, however, there has been renewed interest in the breed, particularly in the United States, where Marans have gained popularity for their unique egg color and friendly personalities.
