What is mealy?

Mealy, also known as floury or starchy apples, are a type of apple that have a dry and crumbly texture, similar to that of raw potatoes. These apples are often described as having a meal-like consistency, hence the name "mealy". Mealy apples are not as juicy or crisp as other varieties, and they are often considered less desirable for eating fresh out of hand.

Mealy apples are typically better suited for cooking and baking, as their texture holds up well when cooked. They are commonly used in pies, applesauce, and other cooked dishes. Some popular varieties of mealy apples include McIntosh, Cortland, and Red Delicious.

To help prevent apples from becoming mealy, it is important to store them properly. Apples should be kept in the refrigerator to maintain their crispness and juiciness. Additionally, apples should not be stored near strong-smelling foods, as they can easily absorb odors that may affect their flavor and texture.
