The medieval period, also known as the Middle Ages, lasted from around the 5th century to the 15th century. It began after the fall of the Roman Empire and ended with the Renaissance.

During this time, Europe experienced significant social, economic, and political changes. Feudalism was the dominant social and economic system, with lords and nobles controlling vast amounts of land and relying on the labor of peasants. The Catholic Church also wielded significant power, shaping the spiritual and cultural life of Europe.

The medieval period saw significant advancements in areas such as agriculture, trade, and architecture, as well as the development of new technologies like the printing press. It was also marked by numerous conflicts, including the Crusades and the Hundred Years' War.

The arts and literature of the medieval period were heavily influenced by religious themes and symbolism, with notable works including Beowulf, The Divine Comedy, and Canterbury Tales. Finally, the Black Death, one of the deadliest pandemics in history, swept through Europe during the mid-14th century, causing widespread death and transformation in social and economic structures.
