What is melanthius?

Melanthius is a character in Greek mythology, specifically in Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey. He is the goatherd for the house of Odysseus, and is described as cruel, arrogant, and disloyal. Melanthius aligns himself with the suitors who have taken over Odysseus' house in his absence, and he mistreats both Odysseus and his loyal servant, Eumaeus.

Despite his treacherous behavior, Melanthius meets a brutal end when he is killed by Odysseus and his son Telemachus during the final confrontation with the suitors. His fate serves as a warning to those who betray their rightful king and act against justice and loyalty.
