What is menadiol?

Menadiol is a water-soluble vitamin K3 supplement, also known as menadione. It is manufactured synthetically and is used as a nutritional supplement. Menadiol is a precursor to vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting and bone health.

Menadiol is often used in animal feed to prevent vitamin K deficiency in livestock. It is also used in the production of pet food and as a food additive in some countries.

In humans, menadiol is not commonly used as a dietary supplement due to concerns about toxicity. Menadiol can cause liver damage and other adverse side effects when taken in large doses. For this reason, other forms of vitamin K, such as phylloquinone (K1) and menaquinone (K2), are considered safer and more effective for human consumption.

People with liver or kidney problems, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, should avoid menadiol supplementation. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any dietary supplement.
