Metecos were a group of non-citizen residents in ancient Athens who were not born there but had come from other parts of Greece or foreign countries. They were allowed to live in Athens but were not granted the same rights and privileges as citizens.
Metecos were required to pay taxes and serve in the military but were not allowed to own property, vote, or hold public office. Many of them were skilled artisans, traders, or businesspeople who made significant contributions to Athens' economy and culture.
Due to the limitations on their legal status, metecos often faced discrimination and stereotypes from the citizens of Athens. Nonetheless, some metecos achieved success and became prominent members of Athenian society.
