What is microfit?

MicroFIT is a solar energy program designed by the Government of Ontario, Canada to encourage homeowners, small businesses, and farmers to generate renewable energy and sell it back to the province's electricity grid.

Under the MicroFIT program, eligible participants can install a solar-panel system with a maximum capacity of 10 kilowatts (kW) on their property and receive a guaranteed payment for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity they generate for a period of 20 years.

The program is open to Ontario residents who own, lease, or have a long-term arrangement to use a property that is connected to the province's electricity grid. Participants must complete an application and meet certain technical and financial eligibility requirements, including obtaining a connection agreement with their local distribution company.

The MicroFIT program has helped many homeowners and small businesses reduce their carbon footprint and generate some additional income. However, the program has also faced criticism for its high upfront costs and limited capacity, as only a certain amount of capacity is available under the program each year.
