What is mihi?

Mihi is a traditional Māori introduction that is used to formally introduce oneself or others. It serves as a way to establish a connection, acknowledge ancestors, and express gratitude. A typical mihi includes identifying oneself by name, whakapapa (genealogy), and the iwi (tribe) or hapu (sub-tribe) one belongs to. It also includes acknowledging the ancestors who have come before and the land that is being spoken on. Mihi is still an important part of Māori culture and is often used in meetings, gatherings, and ceremonies.
