What is minutia?

These include ridge endings, bifurcations, and dots which form the unique pattern on each person's fingers, palms, and toes.

Automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIS) use algorithms to analyze the location, orientation, and frequency of minutiae points to establish a match between known and unknown fingerprints.
