What is miskeen?

"Miskeen" is an Arabic term (مِسكِين) that is commonly used to describe someone who is poor, destitute, or in a pitiable condition. In a broader sense, it can refer to someone who is in need of help or someone to be pitied because of their unfortunate circumstances. The concept of "miskeen" is often associated with compassion and the moral obligation to assist those who are less fortunate.

In Islamic traditions, caring for the miskeen is considered a virtuous act, and there are many teachings urging followers to offer charity and support to those in need. The concept is often mentioned in the Quran and Hadith in the context of Zakat (charitable giving), which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Muslims are encouraged to give a portion of their wealth to those who are impoverished or in need, including the miskeen.

In everyday language, "miskeen" can also be used colloquially in some Arabic-speaking regions to refer to someone who is helpless or unable to fend for themselves, sometimes with a tone of endearment or sympathy. This usage highlights the term's nuance, as it can reflect both material poverty and a broader sense of vulnerability.
