Monowi is a small village located in the northeastern part of Nebraska, United States. It is known as the smallest incorporated municipality of the state and one of the smallest in the country. As of the latest census, Monowi has a population of only one person, making it the only incorporated town in the US with a population of just one. The resident of Monowi is Elsie Eiler, who is also the town's mayor, librarian, clerk, and treasurer. The town has a small bar called Monowi Tavern, which is owned by Elsie Eiler. The village was incorporated in 1938, and in its peak in 1939 had a population of 150 people. However, many residents started moving away from the village seeking employment or better living conditions, and the population kept declining over the years. Despite its small size, Monowi is still visited by tourists who are curious about this unique village, which has managed to maintain its incorporation and unique identity over the decades.
