What is mottramite?

Mottramite is a rare mineral that is named after the English mineral collector, John Mottram. It has a chemical formula of PbCu(VO4)(OH), and is a member of the vanadate mineral group. It is typically found as small, green, or yellow-green crystals that are often associated with other copper-bearing minerals such as azurite and malachite.

Mottramite is primarily found in oxidized copper deposits and is often formed through the alteration of other vanadate minerals. It is typically found in high-temperature, acidic hydrothermal systems associated with volcanic rocks. Mottramite has a Mohs hardness of 3.5-4 and a specific gravity of 6.91-6.93.

Mottramite is considered to be an important collectors' mineral due to its rarity and attractive appearance. However, due to its high levels of toxic lead and copper, it is not recommended for use in jewelry or other decorative items. It is primarily used for scientific research and for mineral collections.
