What is moxi?

Moxibustion, often shortened to "moxi," is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) on or near specific points on the body. The heat generated from the burning mugwort stimulates blood circulation and energy flow in the body, promoting healing and balancing the body's energy.

Moxibustion is believed to have originated in ancient China and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. It is often used to treat a variety of conditions, including arthritis, digestive disorders, gynecological issues, and pain management.

There are different methods of applying moxibustion, including direct (placing a cone of moxa directly on the skin), indirect (holding a burning stick of moxa near the skin), and warming needle (placing a small amount of moxa on the end of an acupuncture needle). The choice of method depends on the individual's condition and the desired effect.

Moxibustion is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and qualified practitioner. However, it is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or decreased sensitivity to heat. It is always best to consult with a healthcare provider before undergoing moxibustion therapy.
