What is mucenicii?

Mucenicii is a traditional Romanian pastry served on March 9th, on the day of the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste. The pastry is made from a sweet dough that is formed into a small flatbread or ring, then boiled in water with honey or sugar and sometimes nuts or raisins added. The shape is symbolic, representing the chains that bound the martyrs who were killed for their Christian faith. The tradition of making mucenicii dates back to ancient times and is an important part of Romanian culture and religious customs. They are typically enjoyed with a cup of sweetened milk or yogurt.
