The NKGB was a Soviet intelligence and security agency that existed from 1934 until 1946. It was initially created as a counterintelligence agency to combat perceived threats from foreign intelligence services as well as internal political dissent within the Soviet Union.
During World War II, the NKGB played a crucial role in gathering intelligence on Nazi Germany and its allies, conducting espionage operations and sabotage missions throughout Europe.
The NKGB was responsible for conducting purges of suspected enemies of the state, including political dissidents, military officers, and intellectuals. It also had responsibility for Soviet prisoner of war camps, where it maintained strict control over inmates and implemented harsh punishments for those who resisted.
After the war, the NKGB was replaced by the Ministry of State Security (MGB), which continued many of its functions, including espionage, sabotage, and internal security operations. The MGB was eventually renamed the KGB in 1954.
