What is nmms?

NMMS typically refers to the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship. This is an initiative by the government of India aimed at providing financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to prevent them from dropping out at the eighth grade and encourage them to continue their education at the secondary stage.

Here are some key points about the NMMS:

  1. Objective: The primary goal of the NMMS is to provide scholarships to eligible students to lower dropout rates in high schools by providing financial incentives and encouraging students to complete their secondary education.

  2. Eligibility:

    • Students must be studying in class 8 in a government, government-aided, or local body school.
    • The students must have scored at least 55% marks or equivalent grade in the class 7 examination.
    • The annual income of the student's family should not exceed a certain limit (typically around ₹1.5 lakh, but this may vary by state).
  3. Scholarship Amount:

    • The scholarship amount is generally ₹12,000 per annum (₹1,000 per month) per student.
    • The scholarship is dispersed for four years, from class 9 to class 12, provided the students fulfill the criteria needed for its continuation.
  4. Selection Process:

    • The selection of awardees is made through a written examination conducted by each state or union territory, which consists of two objective-type tests: the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
    • Students are also required to maintain a certain level of academic performance and adherence to regular attendance to continue availing of the scholarship.
  5. Application Process:

    • Interested students usually need to apply through their respective schools.
    • States and union territories may have different procedures, and details are often made available through school announcements or state education department websites.

It's important for interested students and their guardians to check with their respective state's education department for specific details, as eligibility criteria and the application process may slightly differ across regions.
