What is npl?

NPL, short for National Physical Laboratory, is the UK's national measurement institute and the country's largest applied physics organization. It was founded in 1900 and is located in Teddington, England.

NPL's primary focus is to provide accurate and traceable measurements in a wide range of disciplines, including time and frequency, electromagnetic fields, materials, and environmental monitoring. NPL has over 500 scientists, engineers, and technicians who provide expertise in metrology, research, and innovation.

Some of NPL's notable achievements include developing the first atomic clock, playing a key role in the development of the Internet by developing time standards, and leading the development of a new measurement standard for kilogram.

NPL operates as a public corporation and receives funding from the UK government's Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. It also collaborates with industry, academia, and other organizations to develop new measurement technologies and solve real-world problems.
