What is ntprobnp?

NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide) is a hormone that is produced by the heart ventricles in response to increased pressure and volume overload. It is a biomarker that is commonly used in the diagnosis, prognosis, and management of heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases.

NT-proBNP levels are measured through a blood test, and higher levels are associated with an increased risk of heart failure and other cardiac events. Normal levels of NT-proBNP vary based on age, gender, and other factors, but generally range from less than 125 pg/mL in adult men to less than 450 pg/mL in adult women.

NT-proBNP is also used to monitor the effectiveness of heart failure treatments and to adjust medication dosages. Although NT-proBNP is primarily used for cardiac testing, it has also been studied as a potential marker for other health conditions, such as pulmonary embolism, kidney disease, and sepsis.
