What is nubuck?

Nubuck Leather: A Soft, Suede-Like Material

Nubuck is a top-grain cattle leather that has been sanded or buffed on the grain side (the outside) to give it a velvet-like feel. This process creates short protein fibers, resulting in a soft surface. It is similar to suede, but nubuck is created from the outside of the hide, giving it more strength and thickness and a fine grain. Suede is created from the inner layer.

Key Characteristics:

  • Soft and Velvety Texture: The signature characteristic of nubuck leather is its incredibly soft and smooth surface.
  • Durability: Due to being made from the outer grain of the hide, nubuck is more durable than suede.
  • Appearance: Nubuck often displays natural markings and imperfections of the hide. These imperfections are sometimes polished out during the tanning process.
  • Susceptibility to Stains and Moisture: Nubuck is more susceptible to stains and water damage than full-grain leather. Protective sprays are often used.

Care and Maintenance:

Because of its porous nature, nubuck requires special care:

  • Regular Brushing: Use a nubuck brush to remove dirt and dust.
  • Protective Sprays: Apply a nubuck protector spray to help repel water and stains.
  • Specialized Cleaners: Use nubuck-specific cleaners for stains.
  • Avoid Water Saturation: Try to avoid getting nubuck excessively wet.
